On 2 July 2009, the Intergovernmental Agreement for Business Names Agreement (the IGA) came into effect. The IGA reflected an agreement between the Commonwealth, the States and the Territories to establish a national system for business name registration, to be implemented by Commonwealth legislation and supported by referral of States and Territories legislative powers to the Commonwealth.
On 29 June 2017, the IGA was renamed to the Intergovernmental Agreement for Business Names and was amended to reflect the change of name from the Ministerial Council for Corporations to the Legislative and Governance Forum on Corporations and to make other minor amendments.
